Position Objectives:
Smoky Lake County is seeking a focused and experienced individual to join our Public Works Department as a permanent full-time Heavy Duty Mechanic. Reporting directly to the Shop Foreman/Head Mechanic and the Public Works Manager, the Heavy Duty Mechanic will be a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) Local 955 and will collaborate closely with all departments.
Position Summary: This position requires a competent, motivated individual who will work closely with the Shop Foreman/Head Mechanic to complete scheduled maintenance on the County’s fleet vehicles and equipment, as well as urgent repairs that may arise. The role involves performing overhauls, routine maintenance, and preventative maintenance inspections. The Heavy Duty Mechanic troubleshoots, repairs, adjusts, overhauls, and maintains both heavy and automotive equipment used in Smoky Lake County operations. Additionally, the Mechanic will assist with the day-to-day operations of all fleet vehicles and equipment at the Public Works Shop located in the Town of Smoky Lake.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Ensure all municipal assets and equipment are managed and maintained in accordance with current regulations, best practices, and policies.
- Perform required repairs, inspections and preventive maintenance on fleet vehicle and equipment to maximize the safety, productivity, and life of the unit.
- Conduct C.V.I.P.’s on equipment according to Provincial standards.
- Follow inventory procedures.
- Assist with ordering of parts, supplies, products, and materials effectively with appropriate suppliers.
- Cultivate a respectful work environment committed to the health, safety, and wellness of all employees and cooperate with the County’s Joint Health and Safety Committee.
- Undertake training and professional development to ensure that licensing and permitting requirements are met.
- Maintain positive relationships by working closely with other managers and departments.
- Resolve and troubleshoot problem as they arise.
- Assist in conducting ongoing research into new service technologies and trends, provides recommendations for improvements.
Minimum Requirements:
- Valid Journeyman Certificate of Qualifications in Heavy Duty Mechanic.
- Valid Alberta Driver’s License (minimum Class 5) with a clean Driver Abstract.
- Clean Criminal Record Check.
- Comprehensive knowledge of road construction and heavy equipment.
- Understanding of Provincial and Federal Safety Legislation.
- Competent computer skills using: Cat SIS & ET, Cummins Insite, Quickserve, and Snap-On Scanner.
- Knowledgeable of the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations affecting municipal operations.
- Preference may be given to applicants with Heavy Duty Mechanic Red Seal Inter-Provincial Certification and previous experience.
This position offers a wage based on the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) Local 955, Collective Agreement with Smoky Lake County, which includes an excellent benefit package.
