Position Objectives:

Smoky Lake County is accepting resumes from motivated students to join our team as temporary full-time Parks and Recreation Workers through the Summer Employment Program. This opportunity is ideal for students aged 16 and older who want to gain valuable experience in a team-oriented environment. Positions are available for both two (2) months and four (4) months.

POSITION SUMMARY: The STEP workers report directly to the Environment and Parks Manager. They perform general maintenance duties such as painting and routine cleaning of parks and common areas at lakes and other County outdoor facilities, operate small equipment associated with grass cutting, and assist with County supported events.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Operate lawn mowers, grass cutting/hedge trimming machinery, power tools, equipment and other specialized seasonal maintenance equipment assigned by Management in accordance with policies and procedures.
• Move supplies, picnic tables and equipment as directed.
• Clean washrooms, vault toilets, and other public use areas.
• Collect and dispose of garbage and litter as directed.
• Assist with setup, tear-down and the operation of special events and functions.
• Setting up seasonal operations as directed (i.e. clearing trails, cleaning equipment, trail, and park signage, and installing seasonal/floating dock).
• Perform other related duties as directed.

Desirable Training and Experience:

• Valid Alberta Driver’s License (minimum Class 5) with a clean Driver Abstract.
• Withstand common vibratory motion associated with operation of equipment and occasionally rough terrain.
• Be able to lift at least 25 pounds, sit for prolonged periods of time, drive and climb in and out of equipment.
• Be safety conscious and attentive to the working environment.
• Understand oral and written instructions.
