Smoky Lake County Council met with Minister of Indigenous Relations, Rick Wilson, to discuss critical infrastructure and service challenges affecting both the County and Whitefish Lake First Nation #128. Council was direct in its inquiries, emphasizing the urgent need for government support to address pressing transportation and infrastructure issues.
A key topic of discussion was the deteriorating condition of Range Road 130 and Township Road 620, the two main access routes serving Whitefish Lake First Nation. Council highlighted the importance of these roads for residents, emergency responders, and economic activity, and stressed the need for provincial assistance to upgrade and maintain these vital transportation corridors.
Council also raised concerns regarding the water reservoir that supplies Whitefish Lake First Nation. Challenges have arisen due to the land on which the reservoir is located, complicating maintenance and future development efforts. The County called for collaborative solutions to ensure the continued reliability of this essential water infrastructure.
The strong and cooperative relationship between Smoky Lake County and Whitefish Lake First Nation was emphasized throughout the discussion. Council reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with the First Nation to address shared priorities and foster sustainable development in the region.
Additionally, Council highlighted the growing need for improved river access for emergency services. With increasing river activity from Métis Crossing, the County stressed the importance of establishing proper emergency response measures along the waterway and urged the provincial government to support this initiative to enhance safety and preparedness.
At the conclusion of the meeting, Council firmly requested action from the provincial government on these issues. Minister Wilson was urged to prioritize the necessary support and resources to address infrastructure concerns and strengthen services for both Smoky Lake County and Whitefish Lake First Nation.
