NEWS RELEASE: Smoky Lake County Council Advocates for Improved Internet Access in Region

Smoky Lake, AB- March 24, 2025

Smoky Lake County Council recently met with the Deputy Minister of Technology and Innovation to address the urgent need for improved internet accessibility in the region. A key advocate in this discussion was Councilor Dominique Cere, whose passion for equitable internet access was evident throughout the meeting.

Councilor Cere spoke with deep conviction about the importance of ensuring all Smoky Lake County residents—regardless of their location—have access to reliable, high-speed internet. She emphasized that rural communities should not be left behind in Alberta’s digital future and that internet access is no longer a luxury but a necessity for economic development, education, healthcare, and overall quality of life.

Highlighting the stark contrast between urban and rural internet services, Councilor Cere passionately argued that Smoky Lake County residents deserve the same level of connectivity as those living in cities. She shared real-life challenges faced by families, students, and businesses due to inadequate broadband infrastructure and made a compelling case for immediate government support to bridge this digital divide.

Administration echoed this urgency, stressing that improved digital infrastructure is critical for the County’s long-term growth and sustainability. The discussion centered around potential partnerships, funding opportunities, and strategies to accelerate broadband expansion in the region.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Council urged the Minister office to take decisive action to support internet accessibility initiatives in Smoky Lake County, reinforcing their commitment to advocating for solutions that ensure no resident is left disconnected from the modern digital world.
